How does your margin compare to other Shopify stores in your category? Use these benchmarks to set a realistic target for your business.
Most Shopify sellers confuse markup and margin. They sound similar but are calculated completely differently — and getting this wrong leads to serious underpricing mistakes. Markup is based on cost. Margin is based on selling price.
| Markup % | Profit Margin % | Cost Price ($) | Selling Price ($) | Profit ($) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25% | 20% | $10.00 | $12.50 | $2.50 |
| 50% | 33.3% | $10.00 | $15.00 | $5.00 |
| 100% | 50% | $10.00 | $20.00 | $10.00 |
| 150% | 60% | $10.00 | $25.00 | $15.00 |
| 200% | 66.7% | $10.00 | $30.00 | $20.00 |
| 300% | 75% | $10.00 | $40.00 | $30.00 |
Your Shopify profit margin is the percentage of your selling price that you keep as net profit after all costs. The complete formula is:
The key insight most sellers miss is that "Shopify fees" is not just the monthly subscription. It includes three layers: the subscription cost per order, the payment processing fee (2.9% + $0.30 on Basic in the US), and the transaction fee (1–2% if you're not on Shopify Payments). Our calculator includes all three automatically.
Start with your actual selling price — the price your customer pays at checkout. Add your monthly order volume so the calculator can project monthly profit and spread the Shopify subscription cost correctly across your orders.
Enter your product cost (COGS) — what you pay your supplier or manufacturer per unit. Add packaging separately: boxes, tissue paper, stickers, and inserts add up quickly and are often forgotten in margin calculations.
This is where most calculators fail. Choose your actual Shopify plan and whether you're using Shopify Payments. If you use Shopify Payments, the transaction fee is waived — this alone can save 1–2% per order. In India, Shopify Payments is unavailable, so the transaction fee always applies on top of your Razorpay or PayU gateway fees.
Enter your actual carrier cost per order and how much you charge the customer for shipping (zero if you offer free shipping). Then add your customer acquisition cost — your total monthly ad spend divided by total orders. Finally, set your average return rate so the calculator can account for refund losses.
Shopify pricing differs significantly between the US and India, and the difference goes beyond the subscription cost.
| Plan | US Price | India Price | US Txn Fee | India Total Fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $32/mo | ₹1,499/mo | 0% (with SP) | ~4% per order |
| Shopify | $92/mo | ₹5,599/mo | 0% (with SP) | ~3% per order |
| Advanced | $399/mo | ₹22,680/mo | 0% (with SP) | ~2.5% per order |
Use the formula: Net Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100. Net profit equals selling price minus COGS, packaging, Shopify subscription per order, payment processing fee, transaction fee (if applicable), net shipping, ad spend per order, and return losses. Our Shopify profit margin calculator handles all of this automatically and updates in real time as you type.
A healthy Shopify store net profit margin is 20–40%. Below 15% is considered thin and risky — a small rise in ad costs or shipping can eliminate profits entirely. Above 40% is excellent and typically reflects strong brand pricing power. Most successful DTC Shopify brands operate in the 25–35% range. Beauty and cosmetics stores often achieve 50–80%, while electronics stores may only achieve 10–20%.
Yes. Shopify charges a payment processing fee on every transaction (2.9% + $0.30 per order on the US Basic plan). If you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify also charges a transaction fee of 0.5–2% depending on your plan. Using Shopify Payments removes this transaction fee entirely. In India, Shopify Payments is unavailable, so the transaction fee always applies alongside your Razorpay or PayU gateway fee.
In India, Shopify charges a monthly subscription (₹1,499 Basic / ₹5,599 Shopify / ₹22,680 Advanced on annual billing) plus a Shopify transaction fee of 2%, 1%, or 0.5% respectively. Since Shopify Payments is not available in India, merchants also pay a third-party gateway fee of approximately 2% via Razorpay or PayU. Total payment processing costs in India typically reach 3–4% of order value on the Basic plan.
Markup is calculated on your cost price. Margin is calculated on your selling price. A 100% markup only gives you a 50% profit margin. Example: a product costing $10 sold at $20 has a 100% markup but a 50% margin. Many Shopify sellers overprice or underprice because they confuse the two — always use margin for business decisions.
Your break-even price is your total cost per order: COGS + packaging + Shopify fees + net shipping + ad spend per order + return allowance. If you sell below this price you lose money on every order. Our calculator shows the exact break-even price in real time — look for the "Break-even Price" row in the results panel on the right.

For most Indian stores under ₹4–5 lakh/month in GMV, the Basic plan (₹1,499/month) is the most cost-effective. Upgrading to the Shopify plan (₹5,599/month) makes financial sense when the 1% reduction in transaction fee (from 2% to 1%) saves more than the ₹4,100/month extra subscription cost — roughly at ₹4.1 lakh/month in GMV. Use the calculator above to find your exact crossover point.
